MY Weekend, and a promo for my Friend Tamara's Music on MySpace

Hey everyone, I do apologize for falling behind on updating this blog: i've been writing mid-terms for the last month, in addition to other assignments and studying at MUN,etc.. But regardless, I went to the MUN CF costume party friday night, helped out at the "I Love MUN Days" costume party on Saturday, and studied much of the rest of the weekend! But ya, I went to the MUN CF costume party as a 'crusader' ( I made the joke that my sword was "the bible", a pun that only those familiar with the Bible would get!)

On Saturday, I helped direct people to the different registration booths for the "Community Service Learning Day", took part in a flower bulb planting project at Pippy Park in St.John's, and went to Hatcher House afterwards to eat pizza with the people from the other groups. Here's the highlights:

1. 9-10 people from the MUN CF showed up the event, out of a total of 500 participants (not bad for a group of our size!)

2. the Executive Director of "OceanNet" (a group dedicated to "Instilling an Ocean Environmental Ethic) spoke at the opening of the event

3. The fellowship and reflection was great: I realized how something as simple as giving 1-2 hours of your day to plant flower bulbs can impact your community.

On another note, my friend Tamara does such a good job with her music, I thought i'd post this link to her music:

Basically, she tends to write songs whenever she feels down and out, or just wants to get something off her chest. Either way, there's certain feelings and themes she expresses that I believe many people can relate to. Other than that, i'll just let her music speak for itself!

My response to the VOCM question ' Should the province continue with fixed date elections?'

I do apologize for not posting more often, but I was pretty busy with going to MUNCF (MUN Christian Fellowship) last night: we did a manuscript Bible Study of Romans 13:1-19 in the Bible, talked with a leader of IV (Inter-varsity) Fellowship, worshipped God together, socialized and ate snacks together.
Hello everyone, here's my response to the VOCM question of the day, ' Should the province continue with fixed date elections?'

"I agree with Labrador MAINLANDER when he said that the current FPTP (First-past-the-post) system is flawed: in labrador, 51.5% of the popular voted for political parties other than the PCs and yet 75% of Labrador (3 seats out of 4) are held by the PCs!

Personally, I think we need to maintain fixed election dates, while introducing three new measures: 1.Give voters 3 votes per ballot: one for which leader (or independent candidate) would make the best Premier, one for a political party list and one for an MHA; 2. maintain fixed election dates, but introduce 'recall' legislation. If an MHA is caught spending taxpayers money in an illegaly matter, allow for a 'recall by-election' to be called: the first part of the ballot asking whether that MHA should no longer be the MHA and which MHA candidate should replace him or her and 3. allow for re-broadcasts of House of Assembly proceedings up to 1-2 months after a session ended and extend coverage of the HofA proceedings beyond cable to include satellite dishes,etc.. This way, our MHAs every words and actions cab be up for public scrutiny."

What I did on Mid-term break

Hello everyone, it's been too long since i've written an article of a more personal nature, seeing as my political, academic, social and community involvement has increased threefold in the last year or so! On a random note, I was notified of this via the MUNSU newsletter:

" 2. Open forum for students who use Metrobus

This summer, significant changes were made to the Metrobus route schedule. This semester, many student bus riders have approached the Students' Union with comments and suggestions pertaining to the new bus schedule.

In light of this, the Students' Union is organizing an Open Forum for all student Metrobus users. This will be an opportunity for you to provide feedback and suggestions regarding the new Metrobus route system. We will then compile those suggestions and feedback and meet with Metrobus to review the new system. If you are a student bus rider, and if you have thoughts and feedback regarding the new bus system, we strongly encourage you to attend this meeting!
When: Friday, October 12 at 12:00noon
Where: UC-2001 (University Centre; MUNSU Board Room)

If you cannot attend this meeting but wish to provide feedback, please drop by the MUNSU office (UC-2000) and fill out a feedback form. Feedback forms will be available at the office Thursday, Oct. 11.
